Chapter Ten-Sierra

As we gathered our gear in the dimly lit room, the air was thick with anticipation and an unspoken anxiety that seemed to press down on my shoulders like a heavy cloak. I didn’t need any equipment, but I was willing to wait for the other two psychics.

Cassidy, always the artist, clutched her worn khaki backpack, which held her sketchpad and pencils, her eyes alight with the thrill of capturing the unknown. She had insisted on accompanying me, eager to document any visions or spirits we might encounter through her art. Cassidy’s presence was both a comfort and a reminder of the serious nature of our journey into the unknown.

Macie, with a determination that was both fierce and protective, declared she would handle the camera. It was her way of taking part, of ensuring that every moment was recorded, every shadow and whisper captured. Her resolve was palpable, a steady anchor in the swirling currents of our unease.

Midas, ever the cautious one, voiced his concerns with a furrowed brow. He didn’t like the idea of us splitting up; the risks, he argued, were great, and the safety of the team should be our paramount concern. His words hung heavy in the air, a reminder of what was at stake.

Yet, the decision had been made, and the path set. His unease mirrored my own, a silent echo in the depths of my thoughts.

Joshua, with a tenderness that belied his rugged exterior, made sure his wife had a working radio. His concern was a tangible thing, a thread of worry that weaved through his actions.

Macie, taking the radio, declared she would be the one to hold onto it. Her decision was more than just practicality; it was a statement of her willingness to shoulder the burden, to ensure that I could walk without interruptions, my focus undivided as we stepped into the shadows.

For that, I was grateful.

As we stepped outside, the chill of the air seemed to grow colder, the shadows deeper, as we moved, guided by a pull that seemed to tug at the very core of my being. What lay ahead was unknown, a journey into the darkness that awaited us with open arms.

This is weird. It wasn’t cold earlier.

Outside, the night wrapped around us with an intensity that seemed to muffle the very beats of our hearts, its darkness so complete it swallowed the feeble beams of our flashlights whole.

The air, heavy with the scent of damp earth and the ghostly perfume of day's end, seemed to murmur with secrets, its whispers carried on a wind that felt like the breath of the unseen.

Amidst the oppressive darkness, the grounds betrayed an eerie beauty, a stark contrast to the creeping dread that filled the air. The gardens, meticulously cared for, held an otherworldly charm under the moon's pale light.

Gardenias bloomed like specters in the night, their fragrance almost overwhelming, as if trying to mask a smell of something far less pleasant lurking beneath. Their white flowers practically glowed in the dark.
